Why I think now is the wrong time…
So there are a few things that the Government does that is right on the money. They came out with a “road map,” if you will, that shows how regulations are made. They, also, set up a spot for us to ask questions and make comments about these regulations. So there is information out there, but unfortunately, it’s all on the internet. Which would be fine if everyone had access to the internet, or even to a library. With internet prices sky high right now, and most libraries being closed, how are we going to access this information? Another reason we need things to slow down.
But If you’re reading this blog, it’s safe to assume you have access to the internet, which means you can get to the comments section of FederalRegister.gov found here. Here’s what your comment should say:
- One or two sentences that say you understand what the issue is and that you have concerns.
- One or two sentences about what each of your concerns are.
- One or two sentences expressing your thanks for reading the comment and hope that your concerns will be handled with care sensitivity to the current situation.
For instance:
I have been reading up on AIPRA and its proposed changes coming up on March 8th, 2021. I have a couple of concerns, and I hope that you will consider these concerns when making decisions about this issue.
Right now, we are in the midst of a global pandemic. Going to a hearing, or even a preliminary hearing, is not safe for many of our people. Inoculations are in process, but getting inoculated is difficult as only a few are able to get the shots right now. Also, computer costs are sky high, and most libraries are closed. Many are not able to research AIPRA’s proposed changes without these resources.
It is easy to see why I think now is the wrong time to be proposing these changes. Thank you for reading these comments I hope you take this into consideration.
To know more about the injustice of the timing and method the Department is using in rolling out these new regulations, listen to the video on our Blog post: Elder’s Plea to Delay AIPRA Rulemaking during Pandemic.
These new rules will give Native Americans even less due process and protection for Indian landowners. It is vital that you be involved and learn what these new regulations mean for you and your future generations. The proposed changes and presentation materials can be found on our Blog page: AIPRA Proposed Rule Presentation Materials.
The complete list of proposed changes can be found here: www.FederalRegister.gov
It’s easy to submit your comment on the proposed changes directly to the Department by clicking here: FederalRegisterCommentPage. Let the Department know your involved, informed and sharing information they need to understand the impact of their proposed regulations.
